Feasibility of Laser Induced Plasma Micro-machining (LIP-MM)

چکیده
The paper offers evidence on the feasibility of a newly proposed micro-machining process, which is motivated by the need to overcome the various limitations associated with μ-EDM and conventional ultra-short laser micro-machining processes. The limitations in μ-EDM and laser micromachining processes are mainly due to the requirement of a conductive electrode and workpiece, electrode wear and compensation strategies, and complex process control mechanisms respectively. The new process uses a laser beam to generate plasma in a dielectric near the workpiece surface whose explosive expansion results in material removal by mechanisms similar to those that occur in μ-EDM.

Laser-Induced-Plasma-Assisted Ablation and Metallization on C-Plane Single Crystal Sapphire (c-Al2O3)
Laser-induced-plasma-assisted ablation (LIPAA) is a promising micro-machining method that can fabricate microstructure on hard and transparent double-polished single crystal sapphire (SCS). While ablating, a nanosecond pulse 1064 nm wavelength laser beam travels through the SCS substrate and bombards the copper target lined up behind the substrate, which excites the ablating plasma. When laser ...

Laser assisted machining is an alternative to conventional machining of hard and/or difficult-to-process materials which involves pre-heating of a focused area with a laser beam over the surface of the workpiece to cause localized thermal softening along the path of the cutting action. The main advantage that laser assisted machining has over conventional machining is the increased material rem...
متن کاملMicro Scale Laser Shock Processing of Metallic Components
Laser shock processing of copper using focused laser beam size about ten microns is investigated for its feasibility and capability to impart desirable residual stress distributions into the target material in order to improve the fatigue life of the material. Shock pressure and strain/stress are properly modeled to reflect the micro scale involved, and the high strain rate and ultrahigh pressu...

Recent advances in laser peening technology, also known as laser shock processing (LSP) are reported. Specific emphasis is placed on its development in the micro scale regime. LSP imparts desirable residual stress distributions into the target material in order to improve the fatigue life of the material. In modeling improvements, plasma expansion is modeled as laser supported combustion wave, ...

In this paper, the dynamic behavior of laser induced optical breakdown in impure water was studied by using a pump- probe technique. The plasma was induced by a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser pulse (with pulse duration ~10 ns) in distilled water with two types of impurities: (I) a solution (highly diluted salt water as a conductor) and (II) a colloidal (TiO2 in colloidal nanoparticle form as a dielectric...
